Fishings Good...

Well many good reports of Salmon are coming in steady.Sanbanks at Harwood,Coho Pt.,The Mill and Grant Reefs have all produced Winter Springs from 5-20plus pounds.Seems most fish are beetween 150-250' be sure to try different depth.Mike Pilon did just that at Grant Reefs recently, catching small fish at 130' he lowered his gear to 225' and could not keep the Salmon off. When it was al over he and crew headed in with there limit of good size springs and also released several fish. This will continue through to January so if you get a chance head out.Anchovies,Army truck glo hoochie and Pearl Coyote have been good lures..
Mike Filewich also took home a 16lb Chinook off of Gibsons beach same place where Dave caught a Halibut a couple weeks ago.
Prawns
Prawning remains open in all local areas through December.Jan 1 you will see closures in a few areas, however area 15-1 the powell river area will remain open Westview south including most of the east side of Texada,so still plenty of areas to prawn in the new year..Any questions simply stop by or call P.R.O 485-2555.
Trout
Lake fishing is good,Khartoum,Cranberry,Lois and sliammon lake are just a few to check out...Try leaches and Cowichan spoon..This fishery will also get better as we head into January..Remember to release all large trout....
Firearms/C.O.R.E..
We have  both the above courses coming up in the new year so stop in and register....

The latest in powell river's outdoors...

The hunting season is in full swing, and Texada Island is definetly the place to be..Looks like hunters are at about a 60% success rate harvesting deer..It is starting to get tougher as the pressure has been on for,the last couple weeks...Most deer have been either antlerless or spikes and 2pts...Still time to cut tags as the rut is heating up..Mainland hunting has been spotty for only a few bucks comong in,the nicest being Mac's 4x4 taken with an Excalibur crossbow..
Salmon Fishing
This fishery has been steady, with several Chinooks taken in the last couple weeks around Harwood Island.Fishing beetween 130-200' with Anchovies,Coyote's and Plugs...This fishery will only get better,so get your gear ready..
Prawns
Another fishery that has picked up especially around Lund and Powell River is alot better, try  250-300',long soaks..Trout Fishing
This is fairly steady in most lakes, many large cutthrout being hooked and released and left to spawn...Texada lakes are very good at this time...Try Nanton Dodd or Ireland lakes...
Firearms Course

New record salmon...

Well we have a new record for a lang creek Chinook.Tod.B
landed a 52lb Chinook yesterday morning a Lang Bay in Powell River.Fish of this size in malaspina straight are rare, but thanks to the the work of all the volunteers and shane at the hatchery Powell River has a fishery second to none on the winside.Todd lowered his fireman coyote to 50' and bang the battle was on.Todd has caught all kinds of salmon but this battle in shallow water was like no other. When it was over Todd had one of the biggest Salmon ever to come out of our waterms in over 20 years..Congratulations Todd, buy the way i witnessed a seasoned angler have a rod and reel ripped out if his hands the day before by a huge spring. Was it the same one?
Todd also lost a 30lb Plus this morning,so guess what the big boys are here so stop by P.RO. Get the latest, get geared up as Todd did and get big results....
Grant Reefs, and the mill are also hot.Head out at first light to the mill az steve and dave did and its reel simple..You will catch fish!
-Crabbing at harwood and savoury remains good.
-Prawn fishing in Powell River is spotty in some areas and good in others. The key is to vary depth and let traps soak 6-24 hours..
Lake fishing is good in larger and higher elevation lakes.Haslam and Freeda are lakes of the week, win and darcy caught there limits on these lakes in the last couple days.
-Firearms course, there is room in the October class call 604-485-2555ext2 for details.
-Boating licence stop in and right the exam and get your licence the same day.
Hunting season has begun,Stopmin and get licenced upmand try a shot in our range with an excaliber crossbow, you will love it!

MAY MADNESS

Lots happening in Powell Rivers Outdoors..Commercial Prawners out and about,Wolves doing there thing and another Grizzly spotted in our backwoods..
Prawns
We will now in a few weeks how the commercial prawners are doing. Its still early to ge an indication of numbers as there is still some changes in trap placement in order to find the current habitat..Sport prawners have reported mixed reviews. Some doing good and some not so good, wich is normal for this time of year...
Salmon
This fishery has been tough to report on basically because of the lack of anglers out. This due to there being no proper boat launch in Powell River...Killer Whales have been in town going on three weeks,I had them all around my boat this pat weekend, needless t say the bite was off. This large Pod has been feeding on local seals and sea lions as some customers witnessed..They won't go hungry in Powell River, thats why they are still here...They have a few calves wth them wich is nice to see.....
Bears
In the last week many more bears out and about and, with a Grizzly being spotted by a local seasoned hunter. This one a healthy Brear about 40 minutes from town,it had the trademark hump and freddy Kruger claws...
L.E.H.
Still a couple weeks to get your Limited Entry Hunting tags in stop by and get it done!
Ling Cod/Rock Cod
This fishery is wide open in Powell River.I had a great day with my buddy Mark this past weekend. Many Lings over 10lbs with the bigest weighing in at just over twenty(photo) wich we released..Of course the Hiro lure is the trick...Stop by and pick one up and have a look at some other photo's...

winter slabs

The winter Salmon fishing has been great for the handfull of anglers that have managed to get out via gibson's beach or from the south harbour.Mike has been one of the top-rods all winter,he is pictured above with this past weekends catch. He lowered his Army Truck hoochie to 180' and bada bing, bada bang as mike would say the battle was on..This Chinook weighed in at 20lbs.
This fishery will continue for a few weeks, lets just hope we get some launch openenings in the near future or Mike is going to have all these fish pretty much to himself....Sam Out

What's up...

Well there won't be a launch available anytime soon in town.I have made several phone calls and basically from what i have been told the reasons are liability, fisheries, and the city so basically many different reason's.So for the Question of the year"Sam what's happening with the launch"?...Answer "not much" i just hope when it does open it is for all of Powell River not just certain businesses....Stay tuned...
New Harbour
Well the drediging in the south Harbour is pretty much done and the new floats have arrived. The pile driving should start up soon and the harbour will start taking shape in the coming weeks...The Pier is starting to come along with a structure at the West end, this will be a great place for relaxing, reading a book or watching anglers..June 1 was the tenative compleation date for the Harbour,we will just have to wait and see...
Salmon Fishing
There is the odd angler out and about,Mike has the hot hand latley several Chinook the biggest this week 17lb @ Sanbanks of Harwood 180' on a Army truck hoochie...Mike has hooked several fish each time out in the last couple weeks..He has been launching his 14' boat at gibsons..
Prawns
The closures in areas 15-1 and 15-3 will be over starting April 1st so now is a good time to prepare...Prawners that have been out in open areas are reporting very good catches,so look for some good fishing ahead...
Trout
This has slowed due to the cold, however in about three weeks if it warms up,the trout will awake from a long winter and will be ready to party...
Boaters Exam
Starting April 1 the boaters exam will be alot tougher with more questions and possibly a 3 hour online course..As it stands now its not so bad so stop by P.R.O. and get it done we have everything you need and you will have your licence the same day...
Firearms Course..
March 5-6 a few spots available..
May 14-15 several spots available....Remember your hunting licence no longer acts as a firearm licence....Any questions or to sign up for this course call 604-485-255 ext#2 or simply stop in at P.R.O....

February in the Pearl of the World....

Days ar getting longer, spring is just around the corner and i have a sense the fishing in our area is going to be great this year...Winter Chinook fishing has been good however in the last couple days it has tailed off. This fishery will continue to produce for weeks to come so get outthere fish deep 180-250' and you will get groceries.
New Harbour
Well the westview boat-launch is still closed however the dredging will end soon. The pile driving will start on the south end and hopefully this will allow for temporary openings of the launch by the end of the month.June 1st is the reported opening of the new North Harbour and if enough people voice there concerns about the boat launch to City Hall hopefully we will see some openings prior to June..If we dont speak up we wont be launching anything until Summer is my prediction. So if you want to do some local fishing, speak up or dont bother sharpening your hooks. In the meantime you can still launch at Saltery Bay,Lund,Or the steepest launch on the coast Okeover.
Trout
Lois,Cranberry, and Haslam have been steady John and Bill(pictured above) returned from Lois having there best day ever hooking several Rainbows and a few over 10lbs.This fishery will remain good and take off late March early April.
