Boat Launch
Well some bad news.I just recieved word today that the Westview boat launch will not be open over Christmas as was to be the case.Due to damage to the ramp and liability concerns the ramp will remain closed until further notice. To be honest i am tired of waisting my energy on getting information on the ramp,so if you read the peak tommorow hopefully they will keep everybody posted on what is happening. You would think the City would spend a couple bucks every now and then to keep people and businesses affected by the ramp closure in the loop, but it seems we dont matter, anyone want to buy some prawn gear...don't think so.
Fishing
For the few that have had a chance to drive to Lund and launch the fishing has been very good as it always is this time of year.Plenty of Prawns out-there and Winter Springs Behind Harwood and at the Mill.Oh remember no launch in Westview....
Lois Lake
Rainbows on Lois have been very aggressive so if you get a chance don't Delay...

Hudsons Hope Muley
December News
Well holidays are over and lots of work to do.I am just back form the peace country,(Hudsons Hope) We managed to harvest two nice Mule Deer, what a trip.As far as the local seen lets get you up to date..
Hunting
The local season for deer is over in 2-12 however 2-16 (Texada )remains open for bucks until .Dec15 . The archery season in 2-16 runs from Dec 15- Jan 15,so get out and cut your tags..I would say the Texada season started off withn a bang and then sputtered out of a ten i would say it was a 7.5...However it is not over yet...
Salmon Fishing
Well for those that have managed to get out ,you now the fishing is good.Winter springs have been averaging from 8-13lbs.Mike has the hot hand with two chinooks in the teens limiting out last week..
The boat launch
Well here is the latest...Dont expect to be launching your boat in westview anytime soon due to the ongoing work.To make things worse the ramp has been crushed by the dreger causing plenty of damage...I am guessing January-March before we can launch if we are lucky..As far as i am concerned this is unacceptable and it just goes to show the lack of (safe) boat launches in Powell River. It boggles the mind,Powell Lake has better launching facilities than all of Powell Rivers coastline..I realize we will hopefully have a nice harbour down the road,it wont make up for all the time, money and opportunities missed because the lack of facilities...
Trout Fishing
This fishery is prime at this time Nantom lake is the lake of the week with many nice trout being caught. This will last for6-8 weeks so get going...Sam Out...

The rut, and the ramp...
The action is heating up on Texada with The Brachs harvesting two nice deer on a recent trip to Texada the 2x2 and 4x3 are some of the nicest deer i have seen in a while.Other hunters reporting mostly afternoon evening movement with plenty of spikes and does.Question of the week... Are you able to harvest 3-buck's(antlered) on Texada? The answer is yes....
The Ramp
Look's like the Westview bouat launch is about to be closed off due to waterfront work.I will look into this in the next couple days a see what is really going to happen but it doesnt sound good.Stay tuned.....
Trout fishing

Lois Lake
You want to catch plenty of nice trout, real simple head to Lois it is red hot at this time.Be sure to stop by the Pro shop for the secret weapon..Gotta go to Hockey Practice Sam Out

Beach/Shrooms/Bears
In the last few days beach fishing has picked up at lang creel with Chum,Coho and Chinook all being aggressive.Anglers are having luck on spinners and flies with Coho over 10lbs and silver bright. If you have a chance head down and start casting and be sure to stop by the hatchery and witness the egg take.
Mushrooms
Looks like it could be a record year for Pine mushrooms as far as numbers go,however the price is a s low as $2-&4 per pound.A customer picked almost thirty pounds over the weekend only to find out about the low price, hopefully this will change.
Grizzly
Another report of a Grizzly bear in the Powell River area this time in the Valley.A person on a horse apparently had a close encounter with the Bruin on a local riding trail, stay tuned for updates if i hear any.
Cod Fishing
This has come to a close as of the end of September.
Salmon
Backside of Harwood is still the hotspot,be sure to pick up some Anchovies and a Black Magic Hoochie.Troll at 150' and slay'em Sam Out....

Well thhis is the time of year we call transition,Hunting overlaping with fishing.
Fishing
We are still weighing in some nice Salmon from the Mill as well as Lang Bay,this should continue for a few more weeks.Tthe fish that came in yesterday were silver bright,it seems a new run has showed up.Fly fishermen have picking up Nice Coho at Lang Bay in the last few days and shore fishermen are doing the same with spinners and spoons.
Halibut
Another Halibut was caught in Powell River this time in front of the mill.it was in the forty's.This is the third Halibut of the Summer.
Hunting
It is the opening of rifle season today.I think hunters will fair well as there is plenty of deer around.I had three spikes in my yard yesterday and Bow hunters returning fom texada are seeing record numbers of deer.
Grizzly Bear
The Grizzly that was roaming around Powell Lake has been captured in a trap and i belive is being relocated via boat. The question is what drove the bear into town was it a larger Grizzly?I will post some photo's of some huge bear rubs on a tree that measured over Ten Feet at lewis lake ,stay tuned... Harwood Halibut
Barry and Pete
Barry and Pete with a 31lb Chinook and a Ling Cod. Caught off of the East side of Harwood at 150' on the wonderbread Coyote.
Harwood and Halibut
Halibut Well yet another Halibut has been caught off the East side of Harwood Island. Pete and Barry returned to the spot after catching a 31lb Chinook the previuos day. They set there white hoochie at 150' and wham the battle was on,both Pete and Barry had turns playing what they thaught was a seal at first.Thirty five minutes later the battle was over and the 65lb Halibut was in the boat. This is the second Halibut to come from this area in the last few weeks, the same sort of thing started happening in Campbell River a few years ago and now Halibut are being caught fairly regularly. So the question is who will catch the third Halibut in Powell River this Summer?
Salmon
Salmon fishing has been fairly steady Mark picked up two yesterday Aug 3.One just past Myrtle rocks 12lb and a 20lb just South of Lang Bay.Rennato picked up a 13lb Chinook in Thunderbay an Barry and Pete have Taken Home a 31lb and another 16lb Chinook from Harwood.Fishing will continue to pick up along Westview,Grants and Coho Pt as many fish are Migrating and of course Lang Bay will get better by the Day.
Trout Fishing

Calm Before The Storm
Its hard to believe we are almost done with July.Early August brings home the Lang Creek Fish,so get ready.Chinook,Coho and Pinks have already showed up as i found out recently.I hooked several Chinook and also battled a 10lb Coho. The Lang creek fish will stage all the way from the Mill, past Willingdon Beach on through Westview and Myrtle Rocks Then finnaly along Black Pt.(Albion Pt.)into Lang and Douglas Bay.The full moon recently has slowed not only the Salmon fishery but the lakes have slowed also.Steve had a good day at Grantt Reefs on Monday with several Chinooks in the teens. There was also a few fish caught infront of Willingdon beach. One change that is happening this year for the Lang creek fish is that anglers will be able to retain both clipped and non clipped Coho.I will have more details as far as start date and boundries soon.
Aslo going on right now is the P.R.O. salmon series derby this runs into September, with many great prizes up for grabs.Whatch for more details and sighn up info in the coming days.

Dave and Oakes
PRO Report
Salmon Fishing
Salmon fishing has been fairly steady this
past week. Top rod Tod Fouger weighed
in a slab on Saturday just under 35 lbs
from the Iron Mines. The Iron Mines
also gave up the winner in the second
annual Brick Derby. Jeremy took home
top prize $1,000 with a fish just shy of
23 lbs (dressed). Several other fish were
weighed in. Westview, Sliammon, Lewis
Channel, Scotch Fir Point are some
other areas that produced fish. Kudos
also to Dave Mastrodonato who took out
Mr. Oakes and they weighed in a 20-lb
chinook. Party Girl did the trick.
Hot Spots
• Iron Mines/Lewis Channel (slabs)
• Willingdon Beach to the mill (most
underrated fishing grounds)
• Backside of Harwood (just kidding)
• East side of Harwood (grab bag)
• Grant Reefs (sputtering)
• Thunder Bay/Scotch Fir Point (pleasant
surprise). Go get em, Jackie...
As you can see there are fish being caught
all over although some anglers are having
hard luck; it is only a matter of time until
your luck will change.
Gear and Tactics
Anchovies, Army Truck Wonderbread
and Party Girl coyotes have been doing
well. For hoochies try Purple Haze, Army
Truck and, the most underrated hoochie
in the world, the Gold hoochie. Good
depth has been between 80-150 feet on
your downrigger, but don’t be afraid to go
deeper or shallower (mix it up).
Prawns and Crabs
Both these fisheries have been steady so
get your traps out and you will be happy
with your numbers. Don’t forget you
must release female crabs and your limit
for prawns is 200 per licence.
Powell River Lakes
With the recent heat larger cooler lakes
are a sure bet. Powell, Goat, Haslam,
Nanton and, of course, Lois lakes will
produce. The after-dinner fishery seems
to be good. If you need worms or great
local flies PRO is the place.
Cops
Bad Boys, Bad Boys, what you gonna do
when they come for you. Powell Lake
has been the place where most boaters
are being checked for various items of
safety gear, pleasure boat licence and
boat registration. It sounds like many
warnings are being handed out so at least
the cops are giving everybody the heads
up. If you have any questions about what
you need for safety gear, boater’s licence
or registration simply call 604.485.2555
ext 2 and we can help. We can also
provide you with all the safety gear--
flares, life jackets, etcetera.

Fishing's Picking Up..
Well just weighed in Tod's 34lb Chinook as well as a nice hatchery Coho.Wonderbread at 150' did the trick.Congratulations also to Dave Mastrodonato who took out Mr. Oakes and managged to land a nice 20lb Chinook,110' on the party girl coyote.Coho pt. was active last night as Derrick saw a few nice fish being netted this really pissed him off as his rods were silent.
Hot Spots
Iron Mines(big fish)
Harwood Sandbanks(consistent)
Coho PT.(Picking up)
Thunderbay(steady)
Grant Reefs(sputtering)
Westview to Mill(Wild Card)
As you can see by the hot-spots it is a good idea to try a few spots until you get some action.
Top Lures/Bait
-Party Girl Coyote Spoon
-Wonderbread Coyote
-Anchovie(when the bites off)
-Cop Car (my favourite this year)
I am still trying to get photo's on so stay tuned...
lakes
Well with this heat try some larger lakes and higher elevation lakes.Freeda,Goat,Powell all have been steady.
Dont forget weigh your fish in at P.R.O. and get a free lure....

Pearl of the World
Well in this weather Powell River simply is one of the best places to be on earth, combine this with some good fishing and what more could you ask for.
Salmon Fishing
This has remained steady with many fish in the twentys being caught.Brian Mansel showed me the leader board of there family reunion derby on Texada (Shelter Pt.) it looked similar to the derby's years ago with a long list of names and catches. The winner was 23lbs with several other fish in the twenty's,so the west side of Texada is a good place to try if you head out.
The east side of Harwood has also been very good, fisheries checked several boats this past weekend and reported most boats with two or more fish. There are some boats heading out to Grant Reefs so hopefully we will get a report from there,my prediction is that it should be good as Campbell River continues to be hot.South of Powell River also remains good, congratulations to Rennato and Val 25lb chinook was there catch in Thunderbay.
I almost forgot about North of Powell River Lund,Lewis channel are very good at this time.
Top Lures/Gear
-Gold Hoochie,White Hoochie
-cop car coyote
-Anchovies, troll thes anywhere beetween 40-180' mix it up.
Lakes
This is simple almost any lake in Powell River at this time will produce trout, pick up some worms and flies at P.R.O. and enjoy. The lakes in this town are second to none, like i said the pearl of the world.
Dont forget to stop by P.R.O. if you need a boaters licence we can take care of all you need, well gotta open shop stay tuned i am still trying to download photo's but having some truoble. Sam Out

POWELL RIVER OUTDOORS UP-DATE
Salmon Fishing
This has remained steady beetween all the bad weather.A couple Tyees and many Chinooks in the teens to twenty's have been caught in the past week.Ron from Lund with the secret flasher seems to be the master teacher.Ron's tip of the week, don't be afraid to try extra long leaders on hoocheis 4-5'
We hooked four nice chinooks in Thunderbay this past weekend ranging from 9-15lbs.Aaron and Nico did the fishing using a Cop Car Coyote and a purple haze hoochie.
Campbell River has pickced up this past week,so look for Grant's Reef,Savary and Coho pt. to pick up as weel when these fish pass through.Steady coho also being caught, don't be afraid to try the backside of Harwood for Coho. This area is not closed it is simply non-retention of chinook salmon.
Crabs/Prawns
Crab fishing remains good in the crabby areas and surprising prawn numbers in some cases.Look for a good numbers of small-lg prawns in the coming weeks as numbers look good for small-med prawns at this time.
Lake fishing
If you want to catch trout at this time of year you shouldn't have a problem as there are many lakes to choose from.Powell,Inland,Khartoum and of course Lois are sure bets.

Busy, Busy, Busy(say it like the grinch)
Well in the last three weeks i have been fishing in Tahsis,Winter Harbour and of course Powell River.Little did i know Powell River would give me one of my scariest moments on the water.
Tahsis - This was my first time to Tahsis and I would recommend it to anybody. What I was surprised by was how close it turned out to be from Powell River. Also the fact that there is plenty of water to fish if the weather is to rough on the outside. The fishing in late May was slower however we managed a nice Halibut some Chinook Salmon and of Course all kinds of Bottom fish. The Top Jig turned out to be the Hiro Lure Catching a nice halibut in 50' of water. If you would like a nice west coast trip, close to Powell River check out Tahsis,we stayed at Westview Marina a great palce.
Winter Harbour -I just returned from Winter Harbour this past weekend June 13.The fishing was steady especially for Bottom fish and Halibut.Three of us managed to limit out on Halibut and of course catch endless amounts of bottom fish.We also caught 8 nice Chinooks and of course lost the biggest Halibut at the boat.If you plan on heading to either of the above mentioned places stop by P.R.O. FOR A LOOK AT THE HOT-LURES.
Powell River -I purchased a new boat receently and had been out three times and each time picking up nice Salmon. We decided to head to Okeover for a weekend trip." Dad lets get some live shiners for Ling Cod and put them in the live well of the boat" "great idea Nico get r done" With that we had the livewell full of shiners in no time,so off we went towards Kinghorn Island.Of course with livewells they need circulation so by hitting the livewell switch this introduces water into the livewell tank and the overflow goes through a through hull fitting.Well this is all good providing your livewell tank is totally sealed.Well during the trip out of Okeover I kept on turning the switch on for the livewell to give the fish more water and air.Little did i know the tank was not sealed propery at the factory causing the excess water to spill into the bilge. It is not something you can hear and the only thing that would have detected this is an automatic float switch and this boat did not have one."Dad how come there is water buy the scuppers at my feet"Cole said.I had one look and immediatley lifted the hatch to the inboard motor and you can imagine what i thaught when i saw 4-6 inches of water below the engine. At this point we have no idea where the water is coming from but the only thing i had done differently than the last three trips was use the livewell.Still at this point who Knows where the water is coming from."Comox Coastgurd P.R.O. we are taking on water we are in no immediate danger but please stand buy"This was the the second thing i did after turning on the bilge pump and giving everybody on board instructions on lifejackets and getting all the gear out of the water. To there credit everybody(mostly kids)did exactly what they were told. With the bilge pump working hard the water started to receed and soon all the water was out.By this time the Costguard who was in the area had showed up aswell as a few other boats who heard the call. They made sure we werer o.k. and went on there way. Thanks to all who came to assist. It is a good idea to practice emergency scenarios especially with kids just in case you have an emergency on the water. The key is however scary it is to stay calm and of cousre have all the saftey equipment nessesary for any kind of an emergency. So there you have it it has been a busy couple weeks and Nico next time we use dead shiners.Sam Out
Tahsis - This was my first time to Tahsis and I would recommend it to anybody.
Winter Harbour -I just returned from Winter Harbour this past weekend June 13.The fishing was steady especially for Bottom fish and Halibut.Three of us managed to limit out on Halibut and of course catch endless amounts of bottom fish.We also caught 8 nice Chinooks and of course lost the biggest Halibut at the boat.If you plan on heading to either of the above mentioned places stop by P.R.O. pro report
PRO REPORT
What a week for many anglers targeting salmon. Many salmon were caught over the past week, which is great to see early on in the season and the weather, well it’s been awesome. The two main hot-spots have been Coho Point and Grant Reefs; the fish in both places have ranged between 10 to 20 plus pounds.
Top Rod Tips
- Fish between 80 to 150 feet
- Trolling speed 2.5 miles per hour
- Use minimum 12 lb cannonballs
- Use six-foot leader for spoons
- Use 36 to 48 inch leader for hoochies
- Fish one hour before and after the tide change
- Check gear regularly
- Network with other anglers
- To break slump go out at first light
- Forget your net (this usually brings luck)
Top Producers
-Army truck hoochie
-pearl fishscale Coyote
-Anchovie
-Jamie’s favourite: The PRO Wonderstripe Coyote
It’s nice to see anglers exited about the salmon fishing locally, hopefully this will continue. If you have not been out yet because you’re still grieving about the Canucks get over it and remember the Canucks slogan "Next Year."
Rock Cod
This fishery has been good since the opening with many Ling cod being hooked. Check out the PRO Blog for some local photo’s--you will see what the Hiro lure can do.
Clams and Oysters
With the recent low tides people have taken advantage of this and have been harvesting shellfish. For tide guides and oyster schuckers PRO is the place. Call 604.485.2555 extension 2 for red-tide information.
As far as the backcountry goes there has been plenty of activity. There seems to be no shortage of black bears as well as several sightings of cougars. Hikers and bikers are reminded that hunting season has started so make sure you can be heard and seen for safety. The bear and cougar hunting season will end June 15 and will then re-open in September.
PRO Angler of the Year Derby
June 1 will be the start of the annual PRO Angler of the Year Derby. Here is the deal:
-Entry fee $25 per angler (sign up at PRO)
-Derby runs from June to September
-Weigh stations: PRO, Kane’s Sports Bar and Bistro, and Savoury Bight.
Basically, when you catch a salmon bring it to any of the above mentioned weigh stations to have it verified and you will then have a chance of winning one of the many prizes. There will be weekly prizes and of course a wind up barbecue at the end of the season. Here are some anglers to watch for:
Dan Hatch (he’s due)
The Brach’s (this family is a fish-catching machine)
Glenn and Cody Pigatto (the guy in the little tin boat that catches all the fish next to your 25-footer)
Cole and Nico (catching bigger fish each year, could be their time)
Andy Vestering (former top rod, what happened Andy?)
Shane Aguis and Family (they fish and work hard—great combination)

whats happening
Well prawns seem to be great in some areas, while in others anglers are wondering where the prawns are.In some areas prawns seem to be molting right now wich makes sense as the numbers are getting better daily as they grow new shells and come out of the sand. The same thing happened last year at this time.I have tried shallow water and also beetween 350-400'deeper was better.Your prawn production will pick up daily, try and leave your gear out through a tide change.
Nice Fish
It was nice to see some nice size salmon come in today.James and crew had a fish over twenty pounds,The Brachs also did well with one of there fish landing in at over twenty pounds. One lucky angler had four fish on board,so guess what sharpen your hooks and try and get out as there is a nice run here right now.

Grant Reefs- Big boys
Coho Pt-No slouch
Westview-Mill-producer

Plenty of Cougar sightings in the Cranberry and Edgehill areas. One Cougar was taken near edgehill a few days ago aswell as one North of town. This could be dew to the lack of deer left in the backwoods, thus the Cougars feed on domestic animals. Some customer's have reported bear sightings also in the last few days so looks like spring is here.
As far as the Ocean goes there has been a large are around Rebecca and Harwood loaded with kreel and herring. This has also attracted Killer whales, hundreds of birds and White-sided Dolphins, this is a good sign for fishing.Still plenty of Crabs and a few Salmon around Harwood.
Don't forget next week all licences will expire so stop by P.R.O. and get your new ones,we have them all in stock.
Congratulations to Marv Neil of Texada for winning P.R.O. buckmasters 2009.Marv takes home a new rifle and scope package.
